i didn't expect this, but as the snacks started rolling in, i realized that obviously the only theme party appropriate for liz is a snack-based theme party. This is the snack conga line after only a couple of guests had arrived.

liz also brought fifty balloons that i rounded up in put in the corner the next day. party ratio - one balloon for every bag of chips.

this is literally like, my seventh digital camera. why do they make them so small and easy to lose?

here we go! xmas in seattle!!!!!

theres two places my mom sits in her house...this is one of them and below is the other one. we call it "the thrown." here chris has stolen it.

the entire time we were in seattle, chris complained about my mom's tv being too small.

these are the langdons and this is right before we stuffed our faces with tomatoes filled with cheesy rice and shrimp. sounds weird but literally was one of the best things i have ever eaten.

then on to dads where the real party started:

not every day you get a private concert! my dad, his brother and my cousin put on quite a show for us and we did a lot of singing along. some notes: i need to work on my voice before my next visit and maybe need to practice the tambourine. being the only person NOT participating in a sing-along sucks.

this candle's story is an epic odyssey. its literally like forty years old and used to belong to my grandma. I'm pretty sure its from my dad's childhood even. anyway - now my dad has it and he gets it filled with wax every now and then so the tradition lives on and on and on. its pretty cool and basically represents christmas spirit in the krause family.

Rosie Had A Really Fun Birthday This Year

Chris and I hosted a birthday party for our favorite person, Rosanne. We got a cows worth of cheese and meat and had a big old bash. This is Chris pridefully readying our house for guests. What a guy!

Liz made super clever pins of old pictures of Rosies rave days. All the pin backs eventually fell off, but we kept the pics and put them on our fridge, so now we have a fridge shrine dedicated to Rave Rosie.

Another one of my amazing, super talented friends, Eleanor, made this red wine, head-explosion delicious cake (we added the macaroons):

We tried to play Celebrity but everyone started screaming all at once, so that ended quickly. Really what we did best that night was sit at our kitchen table and drink whiskey:

Its funny, something I learning about the difference between being in your twenties and adulthood is directly related to dinner parties. When you are in your twenties and all of your guests bring a bottle of whiskey, you drink it all. Every last drop like its your last day on earth and then you call in sick to work the next day. But when youre an adult, you drink it casually, in moderation and then put the rest away in the liquor cabinet that only gets opened on holidays and other special occasions. Im ready for adulthood.

Doesnt this seem like a low key night of soft light and cheerful banter? It wasnt. Things definitely got weird:

The Beach

I had a big trip this summer to Guatemala with Mac, Nick and Spencer. LOTS of learning took place.

This town we stayed in was called El Paredon and the roads were actually just black sand paths. We slept in a bamboo bungalow and turned into crazy people beneath a full moon on a black sand beach. Spencer, Mac and Nick are the ultimate chillers. When I was worried about when we would find the next bathroom and being extorted by cops, they were smooth sailing. I wish I could powder them and put them in a pill to take whenever I feel too tight.

I wrote about my trip to Guatemala in one of my writing classes and there were two Spanish speakers in my class who were shocked by the name El Paredon. Translated, it means a firing squad wall.

This is where all the magic happened. Rum + Hammocks = CRAZY ACROBATICS!!!

This is was a bad dog. It attacked a neighbor's baby chicken and the owner of our little camp whacked it with a stick and then used black magic to bring the chick back to life.

This summer I saw a pink sand beach and a black sand beach. Black sand beaches totally win. That shit's dramatic!!

Ferry boat.

None of us could really handle this bird. It was enormous and angry. We danced around it taking pictures and being scared and then this little ten year old girl shows up and takes charge and made us look like big babies. Guatemala is pretty street in that regard.

I like this picture because we all look so relaxed, but the truth was, we were being annihilated by mosquitoes. Like, I think I recall Spencer run screaming back to our room saying he couldn't take it anymore. Some how a rumor started that if you got one hundred mosquito bites, you die - so things were tense as our trip wore on...there was a lot of counting...

Look at them! I'm sure I was kind of a nutcase to deal with - I'm not a dawdler and I like to stick to the plan, but I would go on another trip with these guys any time if they would take me. This was a super special week.

Check out the motley crew that assembled for the Belmont Stakes this year. VIPs. Couldn't think of a better crew - spirits were high, everyone was eager to gamble and no one actually knew what they were doing. On the car ride to the race track we research how to bet on horse racing. I feel like everyone was acting like they understood it, but I'm guessing no one actually did based on the day's results. Our driver was great. Paul latched on to him quickly and got his card. When the stakes were over, Paul called him and he came and got us. He seemed to like us but in hindsight I'm positive he thought he was driving a bunch of frivolous retards to a meaningless event.

Studying the guide, which was a text book of confusing symbols and numbers. I trusted they knew what was up and at one point Paul, Jordan and I all bet on the same horses in a trifecta and lost 100 dollars between the three of us.

It was really rainy and Paul complained the entire time. Paul, Deanna is a saint.

This orange lady was smoking a baby cigar and drinking bottled water. I bet she drove her trailer up from Florida for this event. Class Act.

I thought this was a joke, but when I got home I googled Jockies and its basically the most dangerous profession in the world.

I was sitting on this bench too and was extremely ill. I couldn't stop coughing and was fighting multiple infections with anti-biotics (thanks restaurant work!) and at one point I slumped over and put my head between my legs. Some stupid blond girls who were probably there looking for husbands passed by and saw me and laughed, 'LOOK HOW DRUNK THAT GIRL IS!!!!' When you are twenty five, married with a toddler on your hip and one in the oven living in Gainsville, the joke will be on you, assholes!

Honestly, this guy. The day was NOT a success. It rained and no one won money. The drinks were extremely expensive and we ate raw chicken tenders, but Jordan shined like a little star through all the madness. Jordan, I will go anywhere with you, whenever you want. What a champ!

Vacation With My Mom And My Boyfriend

Chris and I went to Bermuda with my mom. We left from Newark (mistake) but got there earlier enough to indulge in my favorite, Terminal Food. I would have lunch once a week at an airport if I could.

Everything in Bermuda is brightly colored. This is a storage unit. What a beaut!

Chris says this picture is proof that my mom and I look alike, but I think the jury is still out. Pretty sure I was switched at the hospital.

This little guy hung out in the bathroom of my mom's place on this fake rose. At first I thought the lizard was fake too until it blinked at me. Lizards are like the mice of Bermuda, but to me it was a stamp of authenticity that I was somewhere tropical.

Bermuda's existence is kind of a miracle. It was created by an underwater volcano that bubbled and bubbled until lava created formations on the water's surface. From my understanding basically all these different phenomenons had to happen in order for this to occur AND it just happened to bubble up in the Gulf Stream. So here is this tropical paradise, with zero natural resources and tons of ship wrecks just an hour off the coast of South Carolina. Its pretty cool to think about. It has the second biggest ocean research institute in the world, which makes sense. Being a tourist in Bermuda made me want to reconsider my entire career.

You cant rent cars in Bermuda, so we took the public buses everywhere which was extremely annoying. Hands down the worst public transportation I've ever been on. Bermuda is the size of Manhattan, but it takes well over an hour to get from one end to the other. Boo Bermuda on that one.

This is just to display the differences between myself and my mom. We were hiking the abandon railroad tracks and she wore Serengetti safari gear, complete with a holster for her camera while I tried not to wear any clothes at all in order to get some color. We all have a little tanorexia.

Bermuda is filled with a bunch of old British people. This is one of their buses from the motherland.

This was called Tobacco Bay and Chris and swam here every afternoon - it was locals beach and we definitely didnt fit in, but it was nice to take a dip every day after a long bus ride.

Workout had a show on a boat and everyone was in appropriately high spirits for the high seas.

None of my sailor gear really fits anymore (whoops!) but there were definitely some fancy dressers ready for cocktails on the yacht.

Its been a while since I've seen all our friends in the daylight. With summer upon us and BBQ season knocking on our doors, I expect to see more of everyone's pores, scars and imperfections but honestly it was WONDERFUL not being in a bar at 2am or in a house filled with Camel Light smoke or in a cab racing somewhere drunk. We got to see eachother. In the day light. On a boat. It was a really big treat.

People in general look healthier on boats too.

New Goal: Be More Natural In Front Of The Camera

When I know someone is about to take a picture of me, I generally flinch and clench like Im about to get punched in the face, that is, if I cant run and hide first. The other tactic I have is super cheese-ball posing (pictured above). My mom consistently makes fun of me for it (shes the one taking a picture of me in the picture above).

I dont know what it is, but as Ive gotten older, ive become increasingly uncomfortable in front of a camera, which is kind of sad. When the NYT photographer was in Van Horn a couple months ago, it was a huge issue for me. I was totally anxious about being in the pictures (as in, i really didnt want to be photographed) and then when i knew i was about to get photographed, i would turn my head. The photographer called me out on it.

If there is one lesson ive learned as a 28 year-old, its faking confidence works just as well as real confidence 98% of the time. So! For the rest of May Im going to work my angles and show confidence in the face of terror in order to turn over a new leaf. Growing up is easy (totally annoying) to do!

This is Anne. For me, cooking feels like a crazy chemistry experiment without the help of a study group, but for Anne, its as easy as super easy gets, like putting a stamp on a envelope - or doing something you were born to do. In this way, she is my hero.

I met her almost five years ago and she was already on the fast track to becoming a gourmand, but today her skill level in the kitchen far surpasses that. Here are some meatballs she made for us one weekend:

Most notably, today is the 50th anniversary of JFK's inauguration speech (re: "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country"). But also because of the death of Sargent Shriver (married to Eunice Kennedy), who was the founding director of the Peace Corps. By extension, the Peace Corps have been in the news a lot because reports have been surfacing about the safety of woman volunteers.

ANYWAY. Its hard to keep all these people separate and to know who did what and who was married to who and who skied into a tree and died and so forth. Korean Kristmas

The orphans gathered at Chris's house for a Korean BBQ Christmas dinner. We ate 20,000 Weight Watchers points worth of Korean food.

There was so much food and so many people that we had to hit the buffet in waves. I was in group two with all the other cool kids.

After dinner was a Lakers game. I dont know what happened there because I was eating thirds, fourths, fifths....you get the idea. I dont think they won though? Adam had a court side seat.

Tired, Full, Supportive. What use is a roommate if you cant put your head in their lap for a snooze?

AND THEN! The white elephant gift exchange. The best part of the night. So many gifts displayed appealingly on Dara's fully clothed (too bad!) body. Hard not to get grabby.

Chris and I went to the Museum of Natural History today and surprisingly, it wasn't a CF! All the kids were busy sitting in Santa's lap.

Neither of us had ever been, so calling it a revelation would be an understatement...

This is Chris communing with some form of Plains mammal. They look like they are begging him for food.

The Blue Whale was an obvious highlight. Did you know their hearts are the size of Volkswagen Beetles and some of their arteries are so big, a human can swim up them?!?!

Also, please note my new camera's indoor setting. It was like night time in there, and I didn't even use a flash!

So at this point I feel like someone has been playing a bad joke on me in regard to 2010. There are only two and a half weeks left and trials and tribulations just keep coming. 2011 - you couldnt arrive sooner, dark days in the meantime.

The newest load of bullshit in my life is my third roommate (who I've only seen twice in four months) just gave her notice. This means that when we fill her room, it will be the THIRD person to live there in ONE YEAR. This background information is important.

NEW YORK FRIENDS- I need a new (girl) roommate. Someone who is the following:

1. Not an alcoholic that will try to burn down my apartment
2. Not someone who will allow their foreign boyfriend to stay in her room for three months without paying rent
3. Not a total weirdo that will sleep at the house three times in four months and have loud pornographic sex when she does decide to drop by
4. Clean - this doesnt just mean tidy, this means someone who will take initiative when necessary, ie, bigger jobs
5. Not a recluse
6. Some who will have a SHRED of interest in the apartment, my roommate and myself

BASICALLY SOMEONE NORMAL.

I can't believe how weird things are getting.

These Four Plants

These four plants (and two more who are unpictured) are like trick candles. I pour over these plants. I move them around the house to the sun spots. I google them so I am sure I am properly helping them. I pick away their dead parts. I rotate them, gaze at them, all but talk to them. And yet they are hell bent on thinning, drooping and drying out. Visitors give me the same advice that I already knew, that I already googled but nothing helps them.

The two on the ends are obsessed with eachother and if they are side by side, will grow and lean in the other's direction. So I separated them, and now this. Second from the left is half the size that it used to be and the megalith in the middle doesn't seem to have any roots. Its literally fallen out of its pot, soil and all, in one large mass and I have put it back in - maybe its plastic.

home-ownership is: Putting up shelves that don't fall down. Keeping a clean fridge. Mopping and Spot cleaning. Rearranging furniture. Junk drawers. And plant whispering.

Yuck. Look outside. I woke up lost and tried to stay in bed until it started to feel a little too indulgent. Levels are low today. I cry at inappropriate times during FNL and eat food that will turn me into Mischa Barton if I'm not careful. See exhibit A:

The lesson in these lemon bars: Paula Deen recipes are inedible. A dangerous amount of butter went into these and I questioned it as I folded it in. P Deen looks so fat and happy though - Right? WRONG. These were for a housewarming party and I had to cut them into little one inch squares in order for them to be tolerable. No one with normal taste buds and a normal waist line could really enjoy food of this caliber. Sorry Paula - NEXT.

Rain, empty house, projects. I want to learn how to make delicious sauces. I never want to buy a sauce or a dressing in a jar or bottle ever again. I want a job to land in my lap and my room to clean itself so I have time for other things like sauce mastery and frequent day trips.

I caught a foot on a rock at a Hood River camp ground two Sundays ago. Morning of the accident. Lunch meat face. Yes, those are stitches in the shape of a Hitler mustache. Great.

I really wasnt looking like myself with the swelling and all. I couldn't talk so I was alone with my thoughts and the Kardashians. Revelations:

1. Kim Kardashian is worthless, but Khloe and Kourtney are diamonds of solid gold

2. That guy from the Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a hero - there are no words for the frustration of being trapped inside

3. When camping always remember: FLASHLIGHTS

4. MTV has horrible programming, but so does PBS

5. Weightloss - all it takes is a couple broken teeth and mild depression

I woke up Monday Morning, 8 days after my fall to this beautiful mug! Can you believe how fast a face heals? I'm in the process of getting new teeth, but am really happy with how things fixed themselves quite naturally. I think I could even apply for this job and get the gig:

Week Day Beach

Week day beach is the best. It separates the topless from the prudes, the sun worshipers from the tag alongs (the employed from the unemployed). Week day beach is when you actually get to read your book and actually get to time how many minutes you lay on your stomach and your back. There are no distractions, so you can really focus on relaxing as hard as possible. I love week day beach.
